Hollyoak's Operating
Theatre
The MINIMALIST
APPROACH
Most
veterinary operating theatres tend to get cluttered with bits
and pieces of equipment and materials used in operations
over time. At Hollyoak, we take a 'minimalist'
approach. The only 'permanent' fixtures are the
operating table, operating lamp and anaesthetic machine.
Everything else is brought into the theatre as needed for a
particular procedure. The theatre itself is the smallest
room in the surgery.
WHY?
In a
word: HYGEINE. Clutter hides all kinds of nasties -
bacteria, virus', molds, spores, fungi, etc. It makes
disinfection difficult, if not impossible. The
larger the theatre the bigger the contamination problem.
So, Hollyoak's is small. It has washable
walls that can be easily wiped clean with sterilising
agents. Instruments, gowns, drapes, and other small
items are pressure sterilised in our next generation
autoclave. Larger items are chemically sterilised.
This allows us to keep a high standard of cleanliness
which means a lower risk of infection during
surgery.
MONITORING
EQUIPMENT When needed,
we use an ECG (electrocardiogram), respiration, and blood
pressure monitors to continuously check a patient's
condition. These nstruments never replace a
good anaesthetic nurse, but they help us to assess our high
risk cases.
RECOVERY
Once
a patient anaesthetised we never leave
its side until it wakes up after the
operation.
Animals generally wake up
quickly and after a brief period they are full of energy
and very hungry. Often they can go home the same day
as long as they promise not to run, jump and pull out their
stitches!!
