THREE Consulting Rooms!
We have three consulting rooms at Hollyoak. Two are for
general exams and consultations, while the third is
used primarily for healthcare, nutritional and behavioural
consultations.
The
First 100 Seconds ... the 'Art' of veterinary
science:
Diagnosis of a sick animals
begins in the waiting room.
First, your pet will be weighed and logged in on the computer
system. Our reception staff will make a fuss to put your
pet at ease before seeing the vet.
In the consulting room, the vet will use a combination of
observation, questions about the animals medical history and
especially, a good set of experienced hands. While it looks like
the vet is making a fuss over the
animal, her expert hands are conducting a very thorough
external and INTERNAL examination. Are there signs of swelling?
Are any of the internal organs larger, or smaller, than normal?
Does the animal flinch with pain when you
touch sensitive areas?
Where possible, we always use natural light (most of the
Hollyoak surgery has skylights). This is less stressful than
bright examination lights.
This is the 'art' of veterinary science
- the vet puts your pet at ease, and then 'reads' her
patient to get the information she needs ... just like NHS
doctors do by talking to their patients. (How easy it must
be when a patient can tell you where it hurts!)
THE SCIENCE
From this information, the vet can usually narrow down the
diagnosis. If further testing is needed, the vet may want
to draw a small blood sample. Don't worry, they are
experts at this. Our own in-house lab requires very little
blood to provide detailed and accurate results. You'll
read more about that when you visit our lab on this tour.
Just remember: we need drops not vials of blood like in
human medicine!
If your pet needs medication, we have a well stocked
dispensary. We can show you how best to give pills - with
the least amount of stress to your pet and to YOU!
RELAXED
Our consultations are never
rushed. There's plenty of time to explain what we found
and answer your questions. If necessary, you can call us after the
consultation for additional information, or
clarification. If you feel you need more
than 15 minutes of consulting time, just tell us when you
book your appointment. We'll do our best to
accomodate.
INSTANT RECORDS
Each of the consulting rooms has a computer
with access to all of our patient records, including X-ray images
and test results from our laboratory and from external lab
service providers. They also give us access to a vast internet
veterinary library.
