Toffee is a lovely (if you can
use that term for a male) seal point birman. Everyone
immediately likes him. He’s getting on in years, just over 17
now, but is still quite agile and manages to jump to
countertops and window ledges without much problem.
The lady who owned him had to
make a choice. Her new man, or her cat. (Please .. I know what
all women readers are thinking). Toffee had been her companion
during a bitter divorce, so he meant a lot to her. But there
was a new man. He was very nice and he did try very hard. For
six months he tried to get along with the cat. But he never
had animals when he was a boy and just didn’t know how to
behave around them. He took it quite personally when Toffee
would get up and leave the room any time he entered it. And,
the man just couldn’t cope with the demands of having a pet
But, what
finally brought things to a head … ‘it’s either me or that
cat’, was this: Whenever the man took
a bath, Toffee would sit on the tub and stare at him.
Toffees owner didn’t elaborate
further, so you will have to use your imagination. ( And ladies,
I know what you’re thinking, too.) But in the end, Toffee came
to live with the vet.
Well he’s now 17, and his
kidneys have been failing for several years. These days,
that’s not the problem it used to be when kidney problems were
a death sentence. Today, medications keep everything under
control and Toffee has a very good chance of getting to the
big Two-Oh – 20 years old. Whatever they put in those pills,
Toffee loves them. He prefers them to his regular bedtime
treats!
