Binocular
Microscope
A very important, but often overlooked, piece of lab
equipment is the microscope. It lets us detect
parasites, yeasts, fungal and bacterial infections, and a host
of skin problems. We use it in conjunction with our
blood analysers to look for cell abnormalities, and
parasites. Crystals in urine - the forerunner of stones
- can be seen and analysed. This lets the vet decide on the
proper diet and treatment to prevent future problems.
And, the microscope lets us find bacterial infections of the
bladder and
urinary tract.
Looking at faecal
smears lets us determine if an animal is infested with
worms, or other parasites. And we can detect
coccidia in rabbits. Examining tissue samples gives
us an indication of whether or not a 'lump' is malignant
or not.
Our microscope is also set up for a
real-time, remote viewing camera which will link us to experts
via the internet - again, saving time and money for our
patients and their owners.
