LaserCyte Haematology Analyser:

While the Vetscan2 tells us about the fluid chemistry
of your pet's blood, the next analyser - the Idexx LaserCyte - tells us about the blood cells themselves.
It analyses red blood cells (which carry oxygen to organs and tissues) and white blood cells (which are part of the immune system) as well as platelets (which provide clotting functions in case of injury).

With it, we can tell if your pet is aenemic, or suffering from dehydration, or has a low platelet count.  It gives us an indication of infections and inflammation, plus tells us when your pet is suffering from an allergy, or is
infected with parasites.  We can even detect blood
cancers such as leukaemia.  In short, it tells us as
much information as is possible to get about the health of your pet's blood cells - only a very well equipped commercial lab can do better.

The LaserCyte analyser uses, as the name implies, a
laser to measure and count blood cells.  Unlike simpler
haematology machines, it provides a 5 part differential measurement of the blood. Like the Vetscan2 the measurement process is highly automated, thus eliminating operator error and providing accurate and repeatable results. Each sample container has 40000 special (very tiny) beads to ensure perfect calibration.

And, like the Vetscan2 it requires 'drops' NOT vials of blood to work.

The LaserCyte has it's own dedicated computer which
automatically calibrates and analyses each sample.  It
sends the test results to both a local printer and to
our main computer system for inclusion into the
patient record.

Like the Vetscan2, the cost of running a test is less
than sending it out to a commercial lab - and, again
the savings are passed to our clients .
