Blood
Pressure Measurement:
It is
only recently that hypertension, or
high blood pressure, has been recognised as an important
medical condition in cats. It is usually caused by
an underlying medical conditions like chronic kidney failure
and an overactive thyroid gland
(hyper-thyroidism). But, it can also be caused
by a tumor which produces excessive growth hormone, and
by Cushing's
disease.
High blood pressure can cause many
problems in cats, affecting the eyes, brain, nervous system,
heart and kidneys. So measuring your cats blood pressure
is essential in diagnosis and treatment of these and other
diseases.
Our Thames Medical blood pressure kit is quick and easy
to use with the least amount of stress to
your pet. But nursing technique is very
important. A stressed cat's blood pressure increases
rapidly. So making a special fuss, getting it to relax, is all
part of good clinical practice. Cat's love the
attention, and we get accurate blood pressure
readings!
Instead
of using an ordinary stethoscope, this kit comes with a
special doppler heartbeat/pulse monitor which has many other
uses. For example, it is quite common for
cats to be brought into the surgery unable to use
their back legs. This is often caused by a clot which
interrupts, or reduces, the supply of blood to the legs.
With the doppler monitor it's possible to determine if
any blood is getting through the blockage and helps the
vet choose the proper medicines to disolve it.
It
can also be used to monitor heartrates in dogs, small
mammals, birds, and reptiles.
